Loess Bluffs National Wildlife Refuge - Loess Bluff Trail

Formally called Squaw Creek National Wildlife Refuge, Loess (pronounced "luss") Bluffs is located just south of Mound City, Missouri, and about 40 miles northwest of St. Joseph. The park was established in 1935 as an executive order by President Roosevelt, according to the website. The refuge includes 7,440 acres of wetlands, grasslands and forests, and offers many outdoor activities including fishing, mushroom hunting, birdwatching and hiking.

We decided to hit the trails for a little fresh air and exercise.

There are four trails throughout the refuge. We took the Loess Bluff Interpretive Trail, which is a 1.5-mile loop. It took us about an hour total, but we did stop at the top and took pictures and let Henry run around a bit.

This trail is rated “moderately difficult.” There are some steep hills that are rather intimidating if you’re not in the best shape. But believe me, the view at the top is worth it! There is no way Henry could have been able to hike this by himself, so Drew wore him in the carrier. There are some flat spots (through some taller grassy fields) but for the most part its wood chipped and dirt switchbacks. The majority of the trail is tree-covered, so be sure to do a tick-check once you get home!

At the top, there is a little stone shelter that you can sit and take in the views. Henry enjoyed gathering up the sticks and checking out the snail.

Hiking is a great way to experience the refuge and get to see some wildlife. During our hike we saw deer, rabbits and lots of insects from butterflies to snails.

Don't forget to check out Eagle Days, which will be held Saturday, December 5th and Sunday, December 6th, 2020. Events include live eagle shows, guided tours, exhibits and activities for the kids! All events are free.
